What dates and hours are the Gardens open to the public?  Are you open on holidays?

The Gardens are open every day, including holidays, from May 1 through October 31, Monday to Friday from 9am to 6 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 5pm.

Do you have a restaurant at the Gardens?

Fresco at the Gardens restaurant serves breakfast and lunch daily from 8 am to 2 pm, all year-round.  Fresco features a fresh-market ambiance with egg dishes, sandwiches, soups and salads, complemented by a coffee and juice bar with both indoor and outdoor seating.  For more information, contact the restaurant directly at 815-316-2256.

What does it cost to visit the Gardens?

Adult admission is $8 per person, senior admissions (62+) is $7 per person, and students are $6 per person.  Children aged 5 and under are free.

Admission is always free for Anderson Japanese Gardens Members.   To learn more about membership, visit our admissions counter or purchase online.  Members of gardens belonging to the American Horticultural Society may also receive free admission when they present their membership card; please note that certain restrictions do apply.  Consult the AHS Member Directory for more information.

Is there ever free general admission to the Gardens?

The third Thursday of each month is Donation Day.  Admission is free, but we ask that you consider making a donation to the Gardens in whatever amount you feel comfortable giving.  Admission is also free to mothers on Mothers’ Day, fathers on Fathers’ Day and veterans on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day.

How long does it take to go through the Gardens? 

We recommend planning your visit to last an hour to hour and a half to fully enjoy the Gardens.

Do you allow food or drinks in the Gardens?

Only bottled water and koi food (available in the Gift Shop) is permitted in the Gardens.  Food and other beverages may be consumed only in the Visitor Center.  Tuesday Evening in the Gardens and Strings on Sunday events are an exception.

Are the Gardens accessible by wheelchair or stroller?

The paths throughout the Gardens are mostly covered with crushed limestone, and is easily navigated by strollers and wheelchairs.  However, though you are able to view all areas of the Gardens from the paths, some areas have steps or uneven terrain and are not accessible except on foot.  Please ask the admissions staff to show you the flat path tour on our Visitor Map.

Anderson Japanese Gardens also has some wheelchairs available for visitors to use on a first-come, first-served basis.

Are children allowed in the Gardens?

Yes, absolutely.  Please just keep in mind that the Gardens are not a park or playground.  Children should not climb on rocks or trees or play in the ponds or waterfalls.  Adults should not do those things, either.  The Gardens are meant to be a place of peace, calm and reflection and is not the right environment for rowdy or athletic play.

My family wants to take our family portraits in the Gardens.  What do we need to do? 

Rental of the garden before or after hours is available for portrait and special occasion photography sessions.  To check on garden availability and make your reservation, please call 815.229.9390.  Any professional or special occasion photography sessions during open hours is prohibited; this includes, but is not limited to, engagement photos, prom, homecoming, quinceanera, birthday and family reunion photos and pet portraiture.

Can I bring my dog/cat/pony/hamster/lizard/other pet into the Gardens?

The Gardens provide a habitat for a variety of wild birds, insects, fish and other wildlife, but pets of any kind are not allowed (with the exception of service animals).
